An exhibition of paintings by Scottish artist, John Bellany, which opens at the Mitchell Library, Glasgow tomorrow (4 June) is being hailed by the new Glasgow City Marketing Bureau as a hook to attract Italians to visit the city using the new Ryanair service from Pisa to Glasgow Prestwick Airport which began on 1 March 2005.
Bellany, who is one of Scotland’s most important figurative painters and has shown in major galleries in Britain and the United States, divides his time between the UK and Barga in Northern Italy.
Glasgow has a significant Italian community, many of whom have roots in the Barga region, and the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau sees the exhibition as the perfect opportunity to strengthen ties between the two communities at a time when access has never been better.
Councillor Alex Mosson, chairman of the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau commented, “We were delighted to be able to support this exhibition through both Glasgow City Council’s Event and Marketing Working Group and the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau and it will be a great addition to the city’s cultural calendar throughout the main tourist season.
“The period of the exhibition means that the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau can use it to entice Italians to visit the city using the new Ryanair service from Pisa.
Indeed, we have already been active in this market with a delegation from Glasgow receiving a rapturous welcome in Barga prior to embarking on the inaugural flight between Pisa and Prestwick on March 1.”
The John Bellany Odyssey will run from 4 June to 10 September and will feature more than 70 paintings, including many new pieces created especially for the exhibition.
